About Us..

A three-year-old surprises his parents by reciting the alphabet – then signs the letters using American Sign Language.

A child speaks to her mother for the first time in a full sentence.

A student helps his friend finish her artwork and hangs it on the wall for her, but barely realizes that his friend cannot stand up to do it herself.

These are just a few of the special moments that happen each day at Coralwood School. Coralwood, a DeKalb County public school, serves 230 students, ages three through Kindergarten, 54% of which have special needs. Coralwood has 10 classes that are inclusive, with typical and special needs children learning side-by side in the same environment, and six self-contained classes for special needs students who need more one-on-one attention. Currently, Coralwood has three Kindergarten inclusion classes, four Pre-K lottery inclusion classes for four year old students, two inclusion classes for three and four year old students, two inclusion three year old classes and six self-contained classes. The six self-contained classes have opportunities to interact with typically developing students throughout the day. As a result of the hard work of students, staff, parents and community volunteers, Coralwood received in October 2005 the Platinum Award for Academic Excellence from the Governor’s Office and the Georgia Department of Education.

Eight therapists work at Coralwood and provide a variety of therapies individually to students who qualify and as group therapies in the classroom where all students benefit. Therapies offered include physical, occupational, speech/language, recreational, vision and mobility therapies. Coralwood’s facility includes a state of the art playground, a Motor Room and individual therapy rooms. Because of the number of children with medical issues who attend Coralwood, the school provides full time nursing care. Coralwood also has a social worker available to assist families and students.

Coralwood does not have an attendance area and, accordingly, students reside all over DeKalb County. Approximately 21% of Coralwood’s students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Coralwood has a diverse population comprised of 3% Asian, 28% African American, 8% Hispanic, 57% White and 3% Multi-cultural. Additionally, 160 students are served in private day cares or preschools all over DeKalb County. Coralwood’s eight community teachers serve these children who qualify due to a developmental or physical disability.
